Work in Norway

Live and work in the land of the midnight sun, witness the beautiful Northern Lights and absorb the natural beauty of Norway.

A unique opportunity to get to know the Norwegian people, culture and customs. Work on farms or in the tourism industry and get to see and experience Norway from “the inside”.

Location

The placements are located all over Norway, so you could potentially work in the rural, forested north or the fjords and islands of the south. Once you are registered on the programme, our local team will begin the search to match you with a developing family business in tourism, hospitality or agriculture - a hotel, restaurant, tourism business or farm. Be open-minded to the possible locations within Norway – many families are not based in big towns or cities but in interesting, fascinating parts that might be rural but will give you a unique insight into Norwegian culture. Norwegian trivia:

  • Norway enjoys 24 hour daylight from May to December
  • Oslo has given London its Christmas tree every year since WW2 in gratitude for Britain's help
  • Roald Dahl was Norwegian
  • Skiing was invented in Norway - the word and the sport
  • A quarter of Norway is forest and its wildlife includes reindeer, puffins, polar bears and killer whales
What's included in the programme fee?

Take part in the Working Guest – Norway programme and choose between:

  • Working Guest in agriculture, typical jobs include picking fruit, harvesting, taking care of animals, milking, etc. This programme is open to applicants of all nationalities. There are currently numerous opportunities available in 2008, particularly for working guests who have experience of working with horses.
  • Working Guest in tourism, typical jobs include housekeeping, cook, waiter or receptionist, etc. This programme is open to citizens of the European Union and European Economic Area. (EU/EEA)
  • In return for working approximately 35 hours per week (with one and a half days off per week), you’ll receive your accommodation and food and you’ll receive a weekly pocket money of 890 Norwegian Krona (approx £75).
  • Insurance is also included in the programme as well as 24 hour support from our local partners and your host family
  • As your application is distributed to those who have requested a Working Guest – we’ll work closely with you to ensure your application is positive and has the best chance of receiving offers from host families.

How the placement process works: Once you have applied, we work with our Norwegian team to distribute your application as far and wide as possible across Norway. A Host Family who would like to offer you a placement will then contact you directly for a telephone interview – it is then your choice to accept or decline the offer.

Shortly afterwards, you will receive the contract, then all you have to do is finalise your start date with your host family.

Accommodation and Food
  • As a Working Guest in agriculture you will live with your host family. Expect to be sharing the kitchen, living room and bathroom with your host family.
  • As a Working Guest in tourism you may live with your employer but most likely you will be given a separate lodgings with others co-workers.
  • Meals are normally taken with your host family, employers and / or your co-workers. If meals are not provided you will receive extra payment to cover the cost of food.
  • Full details of the accommodation and food arrangements will be provided with the placement offer.
Dates and Duration
  • You are welcome to join the programme throughout the year.
  • Minimum duration is 2 months, maximum is 6 months
  • Inevitably, there is a peak period around spring and summer when tourism businesses and farms have a greater need for working guests; however there are there also plenty of opportunities during the winter months.
  • As it the host family that provides the work placement, the sooner we receive your application, the sooner we can start looking for that ideal placement for you.
  • We recommend that you are as flexible with your start dates as this follows us to distribute your application to more host families.
Flights and Transportation
  • International flights and travel to your host family are not included, however, your host will offer guidelines on the cheapest and most effective way to travel to their home.
  • There is generally an efficient and regular public transport system across Norway allowing you to explore the local area with your time off.
