The Judah Square Rastafarian Community is the biggest Rastafarian community of its kind in South Africa. It is home to about 35 families who work closely together and have created a tight knit and smooth running community. |

The project is located in Kayalethu Township near South Africa's favourite town, Knysna. The community boasts an upbeat and welcoming vibe, colourful homesteads.

- Introduction of non-indigenous pine and gum trees to the area for the building and furniture industry, along with the growth of the townships, has decimated the natural fynbos and forests, and seriously threatened all the creatures that live there. Alien species have flourished. The Rasta community is determined to reverse the damage by removing alien plants, replacing indigenous flora and so draw back indigenous animal species, sunbirds and small duiker. Through their efforts they are creating a sense of pride and responsibility in the townships and volunteers to this program will make friends for life!
- In conjunction with the South Africa National Parks, the brothers and sisters of this community and have established a nature trail that meanders along the Kayalethu River basin (adjacent to the community). Previously this was a piece of land covered with overgrown alien vegetation and a polluted river. The Rasta's initiated the rehabilitation of this eco-system, turning it into a sustainable community project. They are creating walkways, removing the alien invasive species and planting indigenous species- attracting back all the indigenous wildlife. This really is a unique and successful project which deserves our support!
- You will be welcomed as part of the rehabilitation team to develop and rehabilitate this area in the centre of Kayalethu Township. The energy and passion that the community members radiate when they introduce you to the eco-project is inspiring! They are a peaceful and wise community and within no time you will have made friends for life!
