Health education programmes are offered at the health center and in the local community. There are opportunities for both medical professionals and medical trainees to volunteer on the project.

Location

The Medical Center is located in the District of Chorrillos – Lima, on the southern outskirts of Lima.

Lima, capital of Peru, founded on January 18, 1535, is a modern city, which, while constantly expanding, has also managed to maintain the elegance of its historic center. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Center, due to the large number of artistic monuments found there, historic Lima is an enchanting haven of a period long gone.

Lima is also renowned for its nearby pre-Inca archaeological sites, as well as its fabulous museums housing priceless national and private collections.

Project Life

Following your arrival in Lima, you will receive your induction.
As you arrive at the airport in Lima, a transfer will be waiting to take you to your Peruvian Host family.
The following morning, our local coordinator will collect you from your accommodation for the start of your induction.

The 3-day introduction to the country and your placement will help you settle into Peruvian life and will cover sessions on culture and customs, a walking tour of Lima, transportation to the projects and information for excursions to local places of interest.

If you would like to improve your language skills, Spanish courses are also available: 2 hours per day Monday to Friday. Courses start every Monday. You can either concentrate on studying Spanish before you start your volunteer placement, or you can combine the language course with your volunteering. Living with your host family, you will also receive breakfast and evening meals.

Your daily activities will greatly depend upon your level of medical experience. A CV will be requested along with your application, allowing the Doctors to assess where you will best be able to assist. Trainee medical professionals will initially adopt a more observational role, with the level of “hands on” experience developing in time.
All volunteers will have the opportunity to assist with health education campaigns and prepare small workshops for the community.

Working hours are flexible, although you should expect to work either a morning or afternoon shift. Morning shifts are 08:00am to 14:00 and afternoon shifts are 13:00 to 17:00.

Accommodation and Food
  • Accommodation is provided for you in a homestay with a local Peruvian family. The Host Families are from various ethnic backgrounds; they all have different interests and unique lifestyles. Regardless of their differences, all families have one thing in common - a willingness to share their homes with international volunteers.

  • Host families are located within approximately 30 minutes from the project.
