Location

Bangalore: A real a mixture of old and new, Bangalore has ancient buildings and parks while also being described as India’s answer to Silicon Valley. It’s nothing unusual to see Bollywood stars visiting Bangalore to indulge in the vibrant nightlife and the progressive music scene.

Bangalore citizens also have a laidback attitude and are likely to invite you to their homes within minutes of meeting you. Being 1,000m above sea level, the climate is cooler and makes it a year-round comfortable place to be.

Project Life

After arriving at Bangalore airport, a driver will be waiting to take you to your accommodation, where your host family will ensure that you settle into your new home. Starting on Saturday evening, our local coordinator will host an induction for all recently arrived volunteers.  You will also have an opportunity to tour the city and take in the sights and sounds of your new home. Regular social events are also held, giving you the opportunity to meet other volunteers and local people, including a free weekend trip on your second weekend.

The schools and outreach programmes were founded by philanthropists and are funded by various charities.  Funding and support comes from across the world and enables the projects to reach the poorest children in Bangalore’s deprived areas. The organisations try to ensure that the parents support their children’s education, as a way of helping them to break the poverty cycle and grow up with a brighter future.

The schools welcome children from all of India’s faiths and between them they are educating more than 1,000 children from deprived areas. The schools are open, spacious and provide a bustling yet peaceful haven for the children - a far cry from their often difficult, disrupted home lives. The schools are relatively well equipped with outdoor play areas, dining rooms, communal halls, outdoor play areas and a variety of music and arts equipment.

In your role as a volunteer you work directly with the children, providing one-to-one and small-group tuition in core subjects such as English and Maths, as well as involvement with extra-curricular activities, including sports, music and arts. Depending on your own interests and skills, there is also scope to introduce your own project for you to truly make your mark on the children and school.

You will have a timetable designed personally for you, which will divide your days between the various classes and activities, and provide you with a schedule to make the best possible use of your time.

Accommodation and Food
  • Wherever possible you will stay in an Indian home, otherwise share an apartment with other volunteers. Home-stay hosts are carefully selected and you would normally share a non air-conditioned room with another volunteer.
