Volunteering with children with disabilities is a valuable and worthwhile way to spend your time overseas. For years now the school in Phuket has provided refuge and assistance for children suffering predominantly from varying levels of autism. The school aims to provide these children with a compassionate and stimulating environment that helps them reach their full potential when they eventually leave school.

Why you are needed:

The disabled school is a government funded organisation, and whilst it is allocated money for food and any building work that needs to take place, it sadly does not have enough physical support to provide a thorough level of care to the many children who attend. This is where you come in. The school desperately requires additional assistance to help care for and teach the children – your presence at the school will allow the children to receive a high level of daily one-on-one human contact that the schools' overworked staff members are unable to adequately provide.

Induction/Orientation:

Upon arrival, our local coordinator in Thailand will spend the first 2-days with you, introducing you to the staff at the school and making sure you are settled in and shown around the community.  After this, you will be given a buddy (i.e. mentor) to help and advise you on how to care for the children. Your buddy is able to provide you with companionship during your stay at the school, therefore ensuring you are never left unsupervised when working with the children. Male volunteers will be paired with male buddies, and females with females.

Project Life:

"People with autism have said that the world, to them, is a mass of people, places and events which they struggle to make sense of, and which can cause them considerable anxiety" The National Autistic Society (http://www.nas.org.uk/autism)

You will be working with autistic children with varying levels of the disability, ensuring that they receive the attention that they need whilst at the school. You will be equipped with modern facilities for the children's medical and educational needs, including wheel chairs, an abundance of toys, play mats on the floor, television stimulus and a play area outside.

The children who attend the school are aged between 3-7 but occasionally there may also be children aged up to 13 yrs. Approximately 30 autistic children attend the school each day, however the school is able to accommodate up to 40 children.

Your responsibility at the school will not be centred on providing an academic education – your primary focus will be to teach the children life-skills and engage in creative activities such as art, games, dancing, music, and one-to-one interaction. You may also be asked to accompany staff members when they go to meet children who are unable to make the journey to school everyday.

The school is only open during the working week, so in the evenings and over the weekends you are free to explore Thailand.

It is the ambition of this school to ensure that each child reaches their full potential and can make a successful transition into adulthood. It is for this reason that one of the goals of this project is to eventually be able to offer a sister/brother-buddy system for each one of the children. Volunteers will be allocated a specific child, whom they are attached to throughout their stay, thus providing constant one-to-one companionship and care.

The school is located in Kathu, on Thailand's largest island, Phuket (Thailand's famous tourist destination), on the stunning Andaman Coast. The school is only a 30-minute ride from picturesque Phuket town and around 20 minutes to the famous beaches of Patong and Kamala.

There are plenty of small shops near the school for you to explore during your stay in Kathu. Public transport is easily accessed, so you can fully discover the island and sample its many pleasures, from local dishes and festivals to religious ceremonies and community excursions.

Accommodation:

Volunteers are provided with local accommodation in Kathu (which is roughly a 10 minute walk to the school). It is in a small residential community where the locals are always very happy to interact with volunteers. The actual accommodation is basic yet clean and comfortable, and is located over a small local bar where you can sit, chat and relax after school and even teach basic English lessons to the local community.

Food:

Lunch is provided at the school and you will eat with the staff at specified times. There are local restaurants within walking distance for breakfast and dinner. You will have to pay for any meals taken outside of the school, though Thailand is notoriously cheap and it is quite possible to eat a good meal for a pound!

  • Volunteers are welcome to join the project on every Monday throughout the year
  • The minimum programme is 2 weeks

  • International flights are not included
  • Please arrange your flight to arrive at Phuket on the Monday morning. A local coordinator will meet you and take you to the induction.
  • If you are already in Thailand, it is also possible to be met by a local coordinator in Phuket.

Update: June 2010 – Restrictions to Thailand Lifted!
The Foreign Commonwealth Office has lifted its recommendation to avoid travel to Thailand. Click here for more details.

  • All of WAVA's placements are in partnership with recognised and established local organisations, run by or employing local people. These organisations, depending on the nature of what they do, might be small-scale NGOs, family projects, schools or orphanages, or local initiatives with environmental or social goals. We often use local businesses to provide logistical and support services to volunteers such as transfers, pick-ups, accommodation and so on. In this way, we support the local economy through helping independent local businesses to thrive. WAVA takes its partnerships very seriously and works extremely closely with all its partners. All WAVA partners are expected to abide by the WAVA Partnership Principles and Responsible Travel Policy. WAVA does not work with organisations with religious, ideological or political affiliations or goals
  • Comprehensive insurance is available for all programmes. Here are full details of our partnership with Endsleigh. You have no obligation to take up insurance with Endsleigh, but insurance of a suitable sort is mandatory on all our programmes
  • WAVA provides 24-hour emergency support from the UK and our partner provides support locally
  • WAVA has an agreement with the crisis management service Tranquillico, should the very worst situations arise
  • Participation on programmes with wild animals are at the volunteers' own risk; however, WAVA works only with partners who take all possible precautions to ensure volunteer safety
  • If any wider safety concerns arise in the destination, such as civil disturbances or natural disasters, we seek advice from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) and implement their recommendations where appropriate

Whether or not you are a qualified carer or have experienced working in special need schools – this project needs your help. There are always valuable roles for you to play, irrespective of your experience. It is important that you:

  • Are independent and flexible, creative and able to use your own initiative whilst also being able to take direction
  • Comfortable with and enjoy working with children with special needs
  • Have a caring nature and are open to learning in this sometimes emotionally demanding role
  • Are open to and respectful of Thai culture and willing to learn some basic Thai.
  • International volunteers are welcome.

Your weekends are free for independent travel. There are several small shops near the school, as well as a range of restaurants where meals tend to cost between 100-150 BHT.

If you want to explore the island's beaches there are many public buses that are readily available as a connection between the school and the rest of the island. The many nearby beaches in Phuket provide a wonderful way to unwind after work. Patong beach for example, is very close to the school, and is a great place for relaxing with friends. There are also many activities on offer in Patong including sailing, learning how to dive, local tours and boat trips. Phuket is a vibrant and intriguing place for volunteers in search of sun, great food and friends.

If beaches are not quite your thing, then there is a huge range of bars and restaurants as well as parks and forests to explore. The fantastic array of activities in Phuket caters for visitors of all ages, budgets and tastes.

N.B.: Please use this information as a guide only. Whilst we make sure every effort is made to ensure our details are up-to-date, changes at our projects do sometimes occur which are beyond our control.
