Language Assistant Boliva is a cultural exchange programme designed for native English speakers. Participants are given the opportunity to live with a host family, where (in exchange for your own room and three meals a day), you help the family, usually the kids, with their English studies for around 15 hours during the week. In general, the families are quite affluent; you're looked after very well in lovely family homes.

The Language Assistant Bolivia programme is designed for young native English speakers who would like to experience life living in Latin America whilst learning the Spanish language and perfecting their language skills in the beautiful Bolivian city of La Paz.

This is a fantastic chance to immerse yourself in the South American culture by living in a local host family home teaching English to your host family. As you're only contracted to teach English to your new family for a few hours each day you will have plenty of free time to learn and study Spanish and explore this fascinating region of South America.

Language Assistant Bolivia is based in one of Latin America's finest cities, La Paz.

La Paz's location has to be seen to be believed. Flying high at roughly two miles above sea level, La Paz is a city built on and surrounded by geographical masterpieces. Nestled between the Andes Mountains and located in deep canyon gauges it is not hard to see why La Paz is so popular. Surrounded by natural attractions such as Lake Titicaca, La Paz is a Language Assistant's dream and you will have all the time in the world to explore this amazing destination. There are also ancient monuments that out-date Macchu Picchu for you to explore (located just an hour away).

Your teaching responsibilities: Before you arrive in Bolivia you will be in contact with your chosen host family so you will be able to plan and discuss what your English lessons will entail and how your lessons will be structured. It is also important to agree a schedule so everybody is clear about when you will be teaching and when it's your time off. As the teaching is likely to involve tutoring the children in the family for school, the chances are that you will follow their course books. We'll supply you with a starter pack with some great ideas of activities, but we also recommend you buy a good learner's dictionary and grammar book to refer to. DVDs, books, magazines and newspapers in English help you plan fun and interesting lessons. There are many free web resources available with useful teaching tips and printable worksheets etc.

Developing your Spanish language skills: This is a great opportunity to develop your language skills. Although you will be providing 15 hours of English lessons to the family, there are still plenty of opportunities for you to learn the local language. Discuss your aspirations with your host family and agree when English / Spanish is spoken. Furthermore you can also enrol on a language course alongside your teaching to improve your language skills.

Please note that your responsibilities are as a Language Assistant and you will not be requested to perform duties akin to a domestic help or an au pair - namely cooking / cleaning or childminding. However, you will be expected to take a reasonable role with day to day household chores, such as helping to prepare meals, washing up, general tidying etc.

  • Living with your host family, you'll have your own room, and in some cases your own bathroom however the majority of the time you will share facilities with the family.

  • You are welcome to join the programme at any time throughout the year. The exact dates will be agreed and confirmed by your host family.
