People who choose to do internships abroad do so for a number of reasons – they may want to improve their professional skills, experience life in foreign country, establish new business contacts, improve their language skills or simply meet new people. Whatever their reason, there is no question that an unpaid internship in Germany can offer many benefits.
The Internships in Germany programme provides a unique opportunity to gain professional work experience skills and enhance your CV in an established German company. The internships take place in and around Berlin, are adept at providing interns with fulfilling professional environments that utilise their German language skills, and provide a stimulating work placement that embodies the rich culture of Germany.
Our partner organisation in Germany has an extensive network of companies that it uses to find our participants their ideal internship placement. These can include administration, advertising, architecture, arts & culture, event management, graphics design, IT, law, marketing, public relations, social work and tourism.
Participants need to have at least a B1 level of German before they start their internship. A minimum of 4 weeks of German language tuition will be arranged for every participant no matter what level of German they speak before the start of the programme.

A German language level of B1 is required before the internship begins. Our coordinators in Germany will assess your level before you travel and will be able to tell you for how long you will need to take language classes before your internship (a minimum of 4 weeks is required).
Any internship placement depends greatly on your CV/Resume and previous work experience.
Professional internships are a perfect way of gaining an edge in today’s competitive society. By interning abroad you are able to obtain valuable experience in- and outside of work while greatly enriching your CV/Resume. Germany, as Europe’s strongest economy, is one of the best countries worldwide to get valuable professional, cultural, linguistic and personal experience in one trip.
There are two phases of this programme, Induction/ Language Classes and the Internship.
During their first few weeks in Germany, participants will visit an award winning language school in Berlin to get prepared for their internships. A B1 German language level is required before anyone can start their internship, but 4 weeks of tuition are mandatory even if you already speak German on a B1 or an even higher level. If you speak a very low level of German or are a complete beginner, additional weeks of language courses will be necessary before you can start your internship in Berlin. The language school will assess your level and the necessary course duration before you travel.
These weeks are not only used to improve your language skills, but to prepare you with information and training on how to complete correct job applications and interviews in Germany. For example, you will be provided help with creating your CV and Motivational letter in German. This process will be different to various degrees (depending on where you are from) from other European or North American countries. Participants will be able to train in a safe environment and also gain some business language skills before they go to their interviews a few weeks later.
After your induction week, once you have settled in Germany and are fully prepared for your interview, you will be provided with an internship opportunity in one of the following sectors:
- Arts & Culture
- Event Management
- Graphic Design
- Marketing, Advertising, PR
- Social Work and Politics
Any placement depends on your previous work experience and your CV/Resume.
Accommodation and Food
We are able to organise accommodation for additional fees. We offer three different accommodation options:
- Homestay half-board: Single room at a host family in Berlin, breakfast and dinner included
- Flat-share: Single room in a shared flat with access to a kitchen
- Studio apartments: Single or shared, with access to kitchen and en-suite bathroom.
Please enquire with us regarding accommodation prices.
Whilst many of our participants prefer to arrive in Germany knowing that we have taken care of their living arrangements, you are not obligated to request accommodation through us. These options are not all that is available for interns in Germany - and depending on the level of independence that you require, you may want to book a hotel or perhaps stay in a local B&B.
Please refer to the Fees section to book as many weeks in the accommodation that you want.
Flights, Transportation & Visas
- International flights are not included
- Participants should budget for local transportation
CIBT Visa advice...
For expert visa advice we advise our volunteer, work placement, and internship participants to get in touch with CIBT - a company that we work in partnership with. Our UK, Canadian, and US travellers can use CIBT for visa advice and to get their visa applications processed - with visas returned within a week.
Safety & Insurance
All of Twin Work & Volunteer's placements are in partnership with recognised and established local organisations, run by or employing local people. These organisations, depending on the nature of what they do, might be small-scale NGOs, family projects, schools or orphanages, or local initiatives with environmental or social goals.
- We often use local businesses to provide logistical and support services to volunteers such as transfers, pick-ups, accommodation and so on. In this way, we support the local economy through helping independent local businesses to thrive. We take our partnerships very seriously and work extremely closely with all our partners.
- We provide 24-hour emergency support from the UK and our partners provide support locally.
- We have an agreement with the crisis management service Tranquillico, should the very worst situations arise.
- If any wider safety concerns arise in the destination, such as civil disturbances or natural disasters, we seek advice from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) and implement their recommendations where appropriate.
Comprehensive insurance is available for all programmes. You have no obligation to take up insurance with any of these companies, but insurance of a suitable sort is mandatory on all our programmes.
