India

Where modern meets traditional and temple elephants coexist with the microchip

With the second largest population in the world India is both a country of constant hustle and bustle and a country famed for its tranquility and inner peace. From the deserts and mountains of the north to the tropical jungles of the south, this sub-continent has a vast range of natural and cultural influences that make it one of the most diverse places on Earth. India is a former British colony and as a result almost all middle and upper class people are able to speak English well. All forms of higher education are also in English so communicating is not something you have to worry about when visiting. Indian has a recorded history that stretches as far back as five thousand years, and it is not uncommon to find ancient temples alongside the more modern steel and glass monuments; skyscrapers. All of this makes the melting pot of India one of the most exciting destinations in the world in which to volunteer and work .

Money Tips

Approximate exchange rate
India is still a very cheap country to visit. Those travelling (whilst volunteering in Imdia) on a budget can get by on around £5 per day. If you wish to stay in better accommodation and travel in better transport as well as eating in restaurants, you are still only looking at about £15-20 per day. Tipping in restaurants where no service charge is included is appreciated though not compulsory. Much like many Arabic countries, in India you will often need to give a small tip in order to ensure you get what you want, in terms of service, information and help of any kind. For example, if you require directions or you would like someone to take your photo, you will probably have to pay for this service.

Weather and Climate
