Germany

Germany

A fairytale land of enchanting medieval villages, traditional festivals and christmas markets.

Germany is one of the original 6 countries which formed the European Community after WW2 with the aim of unifying Europe and avoiding yet another war. Until 1989 Germany was separated by the Berlin wall, forming West Germany and communist East Germany. Germany was reunited in 1990 after the wall came down in 1989. Stereotypically Germans are thought to be more reserved and less outgoing than many other Europeans. This however, is not always the case, particularly in the south of the country where people tend to be far more extrovert and an outdoor café culture, similar to that of France, Italy and Spain is present in the spring and summer months. Famed for its Christmas markets and summer festivals, any time is a good time to visit Germany.

Money Tips

Approximate exchange rate
Prices in Germany are pretty standard for Western Europe. It is however possible to find cheap yet nice accommodation, as hostels in some German cities such as Berlin tend to be quite up market. These are also great places to stay if you want to meet people. You can usually find budget accommodation for about 20 euros. It is possible to eat quite cheaply in Germany. For example, during the day, rather than going to a restaurant you can try traditional German hotdogs and save your money for the restaurant in the evening where prices are much the same as the rest of Western Europe.

Weather and Climate

Germany Today
Like much of Western Europe, German experiences cold temperatures in winter and warm temperatures in summer, particularly in the south. It is not uncommon for Germany to experience good weather in the early summer months.
