Go on a South Asian adventure

Asian adventure

South Asia is usually considered to be the ultimate backpacking destination for most carefree Brits in their 20s because of its cultural appeal and far away location. There is an abundance of incredible experiences to gain and breathtakingly beautiful places to discover in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. Don’t miss off your South Asia travel list: the amazing Bangkok city, jungle trekking in Laos, Malaysia and Thailand, the natural beauty of Halong Bay, rice terraces and beaches in Bali, the unique food in Singapore, snorkelling and diving in coral reefs and the different temples.

Volunteer abroad

Volunteer

Volunteering abroad is becoming increasingly popular with young people, who are jetting off to Africa, Thailand, India and various other destinations to dedicate their time, effort and enthusiasm into meaningful projects. It’s a truly unique experience to gain as you will meet lots of interesting people and learn about new cultures and languages whilst making a positive contribution to a local project. There are hundreds of volunteering projects across the globe which will really help you to give something back – you could promote ethical elephant tourism, look after game reserve animals or help street children re-build their lives.

Go to at least one big celebration

Holi festival

Holi festival, Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Oktoberfest, Full Moon Party – attend at least one big celebration in your 20s that allows you to relax, meet new people and have a seriously good time – go on, you deserve it.

Go solo

Travel solo

The idea of venturing out into the big world all on your own may seem pretty daunting, but you should always keep in mind that you will never truly be alone. Travelling solo means that you will be able to visit only the locations and attractions that you find interesting, so you won’t have to waste any time being dragged around somewhere you find incredibly boring. Going alone will give you the chance to find out more about yourself, become independent and make plenty of new friends as you meet new people along the way – don’t let anything hold you back from this enriching personal experience!

…But don’t forget to travel with friends

Travel with friends

Travelling with your best friends will be one of the most exciting experiences you will ever have. After all, who better to see the world with than those you love the most? Though it’s great to travel solo also and gain a bit of independence, your friends will always have your back and will be there with you to share the big moments. Make the most of being able to travel with your friends when you’re young, as you might not have the chance in later life.

Interrail around Europe

Interrail

Interrailing is a typical and faithful travel adventure which is one of the best trips to go on in your 20s. Every year hundreds of college and university students gather their friends together to travel around Europe by train, and one year you should definitely be one of them. Interrailing is great because you can buy a pass that allows you to enter as many countries as you want, wherever you want – Europe is waiting for you!

Work abroad

Work abroad in Paris

The world is your oyster and working abroad is one way to really see and understand a city and its unique culture. Your professional career needn’t be a boring 9 to 5 in your local city. Why not spend a month on an internship in Paris? A year in Singapore? Many people even have to work abroad during their gap year in order to keep the travel funds flowing – travellers to Australia can find an abundance of fruit picking and farm work jobs – zucchini anyone?

Backpack across Australia

Australia

With the beautiful beaches, friendly culture and abundance of “typical gap year jobs”, it’s no surprise that Australia is a top destination for backpacking. Many travellers spend months and even years backpacking around this stunning country meeting new people and making unforgettable memories. It is the perfect place to visit in your 20s, so make sure that you don’t miss out on your incredible Aussie adventure!

New Zealand

At some point in your life you need to experience some “out of this world” natural scenery, and New Zealand is the perfect place to visit in your 20s. Top “omg where is my camera” locations include the Milford Sound fiord, the volcanic White Island and the dramatic Fox and Franz Josef glaciers.

Go snorkelling in a stunning coral reef

There is a whole new world under the sea for you to discover, so make sure you don’t miss snorkelling in coral reefs off your travel list. Whether you head to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia or to a smaller coral reef in the Dominican Republic, there are so many beautiful sea creatures and plants to uncover – just be careful not to touch anything or take any of it away in order to help preserve these stunning natural ecosystems.

Climb a mountain

At some point in your 20s you need to pull on a pair of hiking boots and climb a mountain – whether that’s Mount Everest or something much, much smaller. Though it will seem like a lot of effort and might be tough on the way up, the view from the top will be 100% worth it and will leave you feeling awesome, inspired and proud.
